About

Kenny Webster and Steve Johnson, hosts of the Walton & Johnson Show

The Walton & Johnson Show has been rattling Gulf Coast windows for 4 decades. That's longer than most federal programs, and unlike most federal programs, it actually delivers. Today, Steve Johnson hosts with longtime producer Kenny Webster, serving up a morning mix of comedy, politics, pop culture and history that pokes fun at the absurdity of everyday life. Lately, everyday life has been doing most of the writing.

You can hear the show on over a dozen radio stations around the Gulf Coast and beyond. That's a lot of territory for a broadcast that still refuses to issue a trigger warning.

When he's not on the air, Kenny Webster writes for the Houston Chronicle and Breitbart, a résumé that makes media gatekeepers clutch their tote bags. On weekends he tours the country doing standup comedy, because five mornings a week of saying the quiet part out loud apparently wasn't enough.

The Difference

What sets The Walton & Johnson Show apart? The guys say what everyone's thinking but is too scared to say. You know, the stuff you mutter at the TV right before you reach for the remote. Agree or disagree, you'll hear it said plainly: no focus group, no committee, no pre-written apology waiting in the drafts folder.

Do they take flak for it? Constantly. Flak is the show's renewable energy source, and unlike a wind farm, it keeps working when the air goes still.

But behind the jokes is real knowledge and a clear-eyed read on the nature of the beast. No other show on the air today gives an audience such a diverse frame of thought. Love it or hate it, it makes you think, which in modern media counts as a microaggression.

The Successes

Numbers don't have feelings, which is why we like them so much. The Walton & Johnson Show's Core Demo of 25-54 M consistently ranks #1 at all affiliates. Not "#1 in our hearts." Not "#1 among people who took the survey twice." Number one.

The show has racked up numerous awards and accolades. In 2008, it was voted Houston's Favorite Morning Show. It has also been voted #1 Morning Drive Show in Biloxi-Gulfport, MS, Favorite Morning Show Personality in Baton Rouge, LA, and Favorite Morning Show in New Orleans, LA, a city that knows a thing or two about a good time.

Voted, mind you. As in people had a choice and picked this, on purpose. Try getting that result out of a pledge drive.

The Guests

On any given morning, the studio door swings open for the show's dedicated VIP fans, famous comedians, high-profile politicians, authors and musicians.

Expect real conversations and live performances, not the cable-news version, where guests are sorted by outrage level and the host already wrote your answer for you. Here, the comedians are funny, the politicians have to answer the question, and nobody gets a teleprompter.

The 10%ers

That's the self-chosen name for The Walton & Johnson Show's listeners, because only the smartest, prettiest and most sophisticated listener truly "gets" the satire and commentary.

The other 90% are still drafting an angry email.

Membership requirements: a sense of humor, a working radio, and the ability to hear a joke without filing a complaint. You know who you are. And frankly, you look fantastic.
